On 16 August 2012, police shot and killed 34 miners who were on strike at a platinum mine called Marikana. It was the worst police use of force since apartheid. This commission investigated what happened, who gave the orders, and why so many people died.

Report released · 25 June 2015
Found that the police operation was not properly planned and that some shootings constituted murder. Recommended prosecutions. Criticised then-Minister of Police Nathi Mthethwa and SAPS leadership. No senior officials were prosecuted.
